The race to the moon was a pure propaganda exercise from both sides. The Soviets were getting there but had some setbacks and the Americans got there first.
If the Soviets had had any doubt, if they thought they could smear it, you can bet your bottom dollar that they would have exploited it, shown it was a fake and then sent a rocket up to where it had supposedly landed and shown that it hadn't happened.
They didn't. Because it happened.

More to the point, they left a lot of debris behind, not just the US flag - my question, are there telescopes good enough to see this for yourself?
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, there was a discussion about this on somewhere like Slashdot. The answer was basically no, the telescopes and satellites can't get that detailed from here.
ReplyDeleteYou could send a probe to orbit the moon and photograph it, I'm sure. Of course, that wouldn't be proof for the conspiracy theorists - they'd just say that these were obviously faked too.
